What is PICSI?
PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is an advanced sperm selection method used with IVF to improve pregnancy success. It mimics natural sperm selection, where only the healthiest sperm reach the egg. PICSI selects sperm based on their ability to bind to hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance surrounding the egg, indicating sperm maturity and quality. Mature sperm with intact DNA bind to HA.
How is it done?
During PICSI, sperm are exposed to HA, and embryologists select those that bind for injection into the egg during ICSI. This targeted selection increases the chance of choosing sperm with higher DNA integrity and reduces the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo.
What are the benefits of using PICSI?
Studies showed that PICSI reduces miscarriage risk and improves pregnancy outcomes, especially in older couples and those with repeated failed ICSI cycles.
Indications to use PICSI:
- Patients who have high sperm DNA fragmentation
- Patients who had multiple failed IVF cycles
- Patients who had a history of miscarriages.
